Have you ever felt discriminated
against?
In
Europe , people of the Muslim faith have felt a
lot of discrimination because of their religion. Sadly, this discrimination is
not only from some European citizen, but it is also from politicians and
government officials.
Throughout
Europe , women have been denied jobs for
wearing their traditional headscarves. The headscarves are worn by Muslim women
as a sign of faith to their religion. Muslim girls have also been forbidden to
wear them at many schools in Europe . Also, Muslim
men have been fired from jobs for wearing beards that are associated with their
religion.
Amnesty
international is an organization that seeks to protect people’s rights
throughout the world. Recently, the group released a report on Muslim discrimination
throughout several countries in Europe . They
believe that Muslim people, just like everyone else, have the right to express
their religious beliefs.
“wearing
religious and cultural symbols and dress is part of having freedom of
expression. It is about exercising freedom of religion or belief, and this
freedom must be enjoyed by all faiths equally, said Marco Perolini, amnesty
international’s expert on discrimination.
Since
the September 11 attacks on the united states
in 2001, the opinion about Muslim people has worsened throughout Europe . It is believed that politicians should stop this
discrimination, not pass laws to make it worse. Perolini believes that these
new laws violate basic human rights
“we
should not forget that some rights are fundamental. Such as the right not to be
discriminated against, the right to freedom of expression and the right the
freedom of religion” Perolini said. “and governments have the duty to respect
and fulfill them
